Canine Hip Dysplasia
What are your options when considering conservative treatment for your canine companion
The word dysplasia has its origins in Ancient Greek, “Dys” meaning bad or difficult and “Plasis” means formation. Hip Dysplasia (HD) then implies malformation of the hip joint. The condition is genetic and has been diagnosed in many dog breeds, both large and small.
The malformation of the hip begins with a laxity/looseness of the hip joint. All puppies have normal hips at birth and for the first two months of life. Once the puppies start to walk and bear weight, the laxity results in instability of the ball and socket joint. A normal joint has no laxity, and the ball fits snugly into the joint. With each step, the socket is deepened by the pressure of the ball. Each time an affected puppy steps and bears weight, the ball moves a little out of the joint (subluxates) and puts pressure on the rim of the pelvis (instead of the socket).
Testimonial - Mutton the Golden Retriever diagnosed with CHD at only 7 months old
I cannot express enough gratitude for the incredible care and support provided by Animal Health and Hydro in Benoni. When Mutton, my beloved Golden Retriever companion, was diagnosed with hip dysplasia at just 7 months old, our hearts sank with worry. The thought of surgery was daunting, and we were determined to explore alternative options to alleviate his pain and improve his quality of life.
Opting for physical rehabilitation treatment at Animal Health and Hydro was one of the best decisions we made. From the moment we walked through their doors, we were greeted with warmth and professionalism. The team of dedicated professionals, led by a group of exceptionally caring and knowledgeable ladies, embraced Mutton with open arms and hearts.
The hydrotherapy sessions, including the underwater treadmill and swimming, became a lifeline for Mutton. With each session, we witnessed remarkable progress. His pain decreased significantly, especially during the harsh winter months when it was typically at its worst. Not only did his mobility improve, but his balance and overall well-being soared to new heights.
What truly sets Animal Health and Hydro apart is their unwavering dedication to their furry patients. They are not just experts in their field; they are the epitome of compassion, love, and patience. Their genuine care and concern for Mutton's well-being were evident in every interaction, making us feel like valued members of their extended family.
I wholeheartedly recommend Animal Health and Hydro to anyone seeking exceptional care for their furry companions. They are absolutely amazing in every way imaginable. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for helping Mutton regain his joy and vitality.
